Image of red, white, and blue striped volleyball. This year’s girls’ volleyball team is a dynamic group of girls lead by our front four. The team had three returning players and 11 new players.  Volleyball has a winning record going into our strength game.  The team has put together nine wins and limited our losses to three.   Head Coach Sonya Harriott states, ” We are excited about the number of sixth-grade girls on the team.  We are establishing a strong team that we can grow for the next two years.  Our future looks bright.”  The team was fortunate to have several well-rounded skills players who played selflessly enabling all girls to have the opportunity to make plays.

Coaches Harriott and Jicha saw lots of potential in the girls who tried out.  Knowing it was a risk, we decided to keep everyone who tried out on the team.   “It isn’t about winning or losing,” Coach Jicha comments, “it is more about developing student-athletes who excel both in the classroom and on the court.”  Coach Harriott’s philosophy revolves around teaching fundamental skills and introducing players to next-level skills.  Teaching fundamentals gives the team the confidence to take their game to the next level of play.  Each day we practiced serving along with the key skills of Bump, Set, Spike.
In addition to our players, we were fortunate to have an eighth-grader who came on board to help manage the team and keep the score at all of our games.  This was a vital role that required attention to detail and good record-keeping in a fluid environment.   The team luck into a special assistant with Coach Day who assisted with game-day scorekeeping.  Coach Day also provided technical support with position skills.
Both Harriott and Jicha note that the team had lots of support from faculty and staff members at the school.  This year’s success was truly the efforts of a group of dedicated adults and a group of girls who were willing to put in the hard work, effort and time to become great players.   These girls are winners because they are present every time they touch the ball.  This work ethic will pay off for our eight graders who all said they are looking forward to playing high school or travel volleyball.
